Hermit Warbler (Setophaga occidentalis)

General Description: Hermit Warblers (Setophaga occidentalis) are sexually dimorphic warblers. Both genders are gray above, light below, and have yellow faces with a black throat. The wingbars and outer tail feathers are white. In females, the black throat looks faded, and juveniles lack the black throat patch.

Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Parulidae.

Where to Find: Don't look for Hermit Warblers around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in coniferous forests in the high mountains of California, Oregon, and Washington where they breed during summer. However, keep an eye out for them during migration in places like Mount Charleston, Spring Mountain Ranch, and Floyd Lamb Park as they fly to and from Central America.
